Every day cases are reported to the police where mobile phones have been stolen or have been snatched. Mobile phone snatchers typically target women or senior citizens, as they are less likely to put up resistance. Cyber Cell advises you to adopt some basic steps to reduce the risk of your becoming a victim of mobile phone theft.

  1. Use your pin number to lock your phone when you're not using it.
  2. When using your mobile phone in a public place, remain aware of your surroundings and try to avoid using your phone in crowded areas or wherever you feel unsafe. Women traveling by cycle rickshaws should be particularly wary of two-wheeler borne snatchers.
  3. Do not attract attention to your mobile phone when you are carrying or using it on the street. Keep it out of sight in your pocket or handbag when not in use.
  4. Do not leave your phone in an unattended car - if you must, lock it out of sight. A thief can be tempted to break your car window and steal your phone. Generally, make it a habit to keep your phone with you at all times and never leave it unattended.
  5. Make a note of the 15-digit IMEI number, which is a unique identifier for the phone. You can get this by dialling *#06# (star hash 06 hash) from your mobile phone and it will display a 15-digit number. The IMEI number may also be found behind the battery on some phones. This number will help identity your phone and trace ownership quickly.
  6. Property mark your phone and battery with your name and address using a permanent security marker pen.
  7. If your mobile phone is stolen, it is important that your contact the police and your service provider as soon as possible. The service provider should be instructed to immediately bar the SIM card. You can help the police by giving them these details: Phone (SIM card) number, IMEI number, PIN number and details regarding Make & Model.
